On the invitation of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Islamic Republic of Iran the delegation of the CICA Secretariat led by the Executive Director J. Asanov has visited Tehran on May 27-28, 2007.

During the course of the visit bilateral meetings have been held with Mr. Mehdi Safari, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. H.Baeedi-Nejad, Director General for the International Polical Affairs of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Mr. M.R.Nematzadeh, Deputy Minister of Oil, President of the National Iranian Oil Refining and Distribution Company (NIORDC), Mr. H.Bagheri, Director General of National Disasters Task Force of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Brigadier General A. Moghaddam, Head of the Antinarcotics Centre. Besides the program of the visit also included meetings with ECO Secretary General Mr. Khurshid Anwar and the representative of the UN Office on drugs and crimes Mr. R.Arbitrio. The main theme of negotiations was the issues of fulfillment of the parties’ obligations in the context of realization of the CICA confidence building measures.

As is known, the Islamic Republic of Iran has expressed readiness to act as the coordinator of confidence building measures on issues of drug trafficking and emergency management. The Iranian side also has expressed intention to participate in discussion of energy problems in the CICA format.

J.Asanov gave detailed information on current activities of the CICA Secretariat. The delegation of the CICA Secretariat also visited the Headquarters of the Economic Cooperation Organization and has learned with work of the ECO Secretariat. ECO Secretary General Khurshid Anwar and CICA Executive Director J. Asanov have agreed to work on signing of the MoU between the two Secretariats.
